Already in 2000, we received requests from students from the FSU to assist them in the process of conversion in Israel. In most cases the father was Jewish. We turned to the Jerusalem Rabbinical conversion court and received authorization to teach these students, find them families to host them on shabbatot and bring them to the court when they are ready. Since 2004 we have had special conversion groups sponsored by the Ministry of Absorption. We do not differentiate between the converts and the other students. Most of the students do not even know which ones are learning for conversion. About 20 students annually are involved in the conversion program. Each one studies at their own pace. Some are studying at other institutions as well and attend our program in addition. Each case is unique and special attention and great sensitivity is shown throughout the program.
The students who study for conversion study in groups with a special tutor who is well-versed with the syllabus and requirements of the Israeli Rabbinate. Families are found to host the students on Shabatot in order to introduce them to the experience of Shabat in an observant family. The tutors accompany the students throughout the process and all the way to the rabbinical court. This gives the students support and encouragement during what is sometimes a rough journey.
